Back in the fold

Updated: Dec 30, 2020

Yesterday I collected my 2016-17 season ticket book from Tannadice – and also bought a new United hat! Overnight, the apathy (and most off the antagonism towards the club owners) has gone. Suddenly I am once again aware who United’s next opponents are!

I took my Hearts-supporting grandson to Tannadice on Tuesday night for the second round League Cup tie v Partick Thistle, with no great enthusiasm on my part I have to say! My brother in law, another former United fanatic who hasn’t seen United in the flesh for eleven years, was given a complimentary ticket for the previous Saturday’s league match v Queen of the South. He was pleasantly surprised by the experience. He thought the team were pacy, hard-working and had some real ability going forward. He also thought the two central defenders were dire.

I have to say on Tuesday night’s evidence his appraisal was spot on. United won 3-1 but it could very easily have been six – against an admittedly lethargic Thistle side (in the first half at least.) On the downside, one of the United players didn’t even look like a footballer - and that was during the warm-up! The player in question turned out to be centre half Donaldson. He was terrible throughout the match and will cost United dear if he continues to be selected – or doesn’t dramatically improve.

I did however enjoy the match. The team was enthusiastic and skilful – quite refreshing compared to the last couple of seasons. As a result I made enquiries the following day about getting a season ticket! So much for all my “I’ll never go back as long as Stephen Thompson is running things”!

Today I will be closely following events in Dumbarton at the ludicrously named Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium and look forward to returning to my old seat in the George Fox Stand next Saturday. It’s good to be back in the fold!
